Are the weekends causing you to gain weight? Probably, if you're prone to gaining weight, you're probably over 35. You might have a "busy" job during the week, but then "take it easy" on the weekends with non-activities like: watching movies, reading, going to clubs, eating bad things like pizza, beer and other bad foods for the waistline. Well, this isn't about dieting, but how NOT to add the extra pounds you gather over the year by using your days off to relax, which for most of us, is the weekend.

According to Clemens Drenowatz, an assistant professor of exercise science at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, S.C., people eat less and eat healthier during the week as opposed to the weekends when it's a free-for-all war on food. What is recommended is to at least take a 20-minute walk on the weekends and not only NOT gain weight, but lose 2 lbs a year!

It's all about the sedentary time. Just like when you work at a desk/sitting job during the week, you at least have to walk in/out to work, sometimes at big employers you must walk pretty far (3 minutes) to get inside. But the weekends, you don't have to do a thing and the lure of TV, movies, games and sitting seems like a good reward for your hard work during the week, it's just that it's not good for you and adds a layer of fat around your heart.

It was noted during a study, that a loss of 1.6 percent of body fat over one year simply by moving 20 minutes more on the weekends was made. It doesn't have to be hard exercise, just movement and if increases heart rate, all the better. Body fat and where it's located on the body is more detrimental to heart health than just being overweight.

Take it easy eating out. That's where a lot of extra calories come from, even though you are having a good time and the calories just slip by. Sure, eat out, but make smarter choices when you do. Drink tea instead of soda sweetened with a non-sugar sweetener. If you eat a burger, skip 1/2 the fries. Keep your own choice of snacks with you at the movies or on-the-go so that you're not tempted to have something you shouldn't.
