HOW TO HIDE YOUR ONLINE ACTIVITIES WITH WICKR
Finally! A free app that hides your online activities from pooper-snoopers! This is a newer app that even the government can't get into. It's encrypted and un-encrypted from a sending phone to the intended phone and can't be unencrypted in between. The First Amendment guarantees us freedom of speech and the Fourth Amendment make the policing agentcies supposed to have to get a warrant to snoop into your business, but is that how it goes? Nope!
You can fight back with this great free app called WICKR (download here). It's an instant messaging application made by Americans out of San Fransisco, CA. It's available for the iOS, Android, Mac, Windows, and Linux operating systems. The messages can be set to disappear forever at certain intervals. You set how long you want the message/picture/file/text around. They also have a desktop version, but was first developed the phone app in 2012.
WICKR says: "No one except Wickr users have the keys to decipher their content. In addition to encrypting user data and conversations, Wickr strips metadata from all content transmitted through the network." That means security for your phone, computer, emails, pics, files, and texts. Here's a video on how it all works: How WICKR Works Video.
Of course, "the Media" is bashing the app saying that it will be used by terrorists and of course the government doesn't like it because they can't snoop on you at the drop of a hat, so be it. At least we have a way to exercise our rights to free speech and freedom from being spyed on. Sure, you can use this for secret pics/texts to your lover and I'm sure terrorists might use it as well, but they also use cars, televisions, food, clothing, money etc. are we supposed to ban everything? They would just go back to using throw-away cell phones, you can't really stop them using whatever medium they can think of next.
Here's more on what WICKR says about their encryption and the processes:
Wickr username, application ID and device ID are cryptographically hashed with multiple rounds of salted SHA256.
Each message has a new encryption key that is deleted as soon as message is decrypted.
Messages are bound to both the receiver's application and device. (So no one can intercept the message on it's way.)
No password or password hashes ever leave user device. (So don't lose your phone/computer!)
All user content is forensically wiped from the device after it expires so that it CANNOT be recovered by any program or smartypants.
Your UDID (Unique Device Identifier) is never uploaded to our servers so you are always anonymous to us.
All user communications are cleared of any metadata.
So, not only do you have to have the WICKR app on your device, the receiver must have it as well. As of this article posting, the app is free to download/use, but they could change that in the future. It still is worth it to have freedom to text and send pics without worry of who might see it later. You do have to, "Sign up" and create an account inwhich you create a user name and password and add your phone number. They also ask you access to your contacts list to make it easier to send them messages later. That's it, you're in! Have fun (and keep it clean, you lover-texters and pic-senders!)
